Muskie opener this weekend was successful with some nice fish being caught. Most anglers targeted weed lines, reed edges, and cabbage beds here on the south end of the lake. Large spinner baits and bucktails were the staple for these early fish, with most fish seen and caught in less than 7 feet of water.
Smallmouth Bass action remains great. Fish have been hitting almost any bait you throw at them. Most anglers are favoring plastics in darker colors like, pumpkinseed, watermelon or black. Tubes and Senko worms have been working, as well as shallow crank baits. Look for rocky shorelines, reefs, and boulders. These fish are still fairly shallow and most anglers are finding the best number off the reef edges in 6-7 feet of water with some fish on the reef tops in water as shallow as a foot.
Walleye fishing has picked up again this past week. While anglers are still finding some shallow reef fish in the evenings, the deeper fish are getting more active. Deep gravel has produced a good bobber and rigging bite with leeches being the bait of choice. We have been seeing many healthy fish in all size ranges and happy guests have been heading home with their keeper. Lots of smaller walleye being caught mean we have some good up and coming year classes too!
The Soo Line and Red Top trails have been in great shape and we have had many guests up and enjoying the trail system. We had some good rain last night so there are some muddy areas for the more adventurous riders and the moisture is keeping the dust down.
